eHistory on BellyDance f

Belly dance is one of the world’s oldest dances. The term "belly dance" was first used by the French when they saw the body isolations; it’s also called the dance of adventure. Is a dance uniquely designed for the female body, with an emphasis on abdominal muscles, hip and chest movements; it is firm and earthy, with bare feet connected to the ground. It got its start not as entertainment, but for childbirth, as a ritual, basically the sisters of the women giving birth, would assist the new mother by undulating and rolling their bodies in natural, curvy snake-like movements to help with the delivery of the baby, belly dancing is natural to a women’s bone and muscle structure with movements starting from the torso rather than in the legs and feet. It retains its connection to fertility by being an essential feature at weddings in many Middle Eastern countries. In the 1920's Egypt again followed America's footsteps when they began making movies with belly dancers.  This was the beginning of choreography in the Middle East. Egypt is considered to be the source of belly dance. For Saudi women, the dance itself was considered to be sacred, and not intended to be seen by men at all. Belly dance is recognized as a dance style of its own.

There are several points that make it different from other dance forms. Throughout history, the dance was performed by women for women. However, there was a period in the old days when the dance became performance art (entertainment) and was then performed in the presence of men and women. Belly dance is generally performed barefoot and the costumes are often colorful with flowing scarves with coins that make a lot of sound, there are other accessories that a belly dancer uses like colorful veils, Isis wings, fans, swords, canes, finger cymbals, snakes, candle trays, and even tiny or huge candelabras with flaming candles.  Today many Middle Eastern countries forbid women to perform the dance for many reasons for example the Arab men are afraid of the tremendous power in the hands of women when they perform this dance. During the 1950's, belly dancing was declared illegal in Egypt, after a rebellion result, the governments canceled the ban with one condition -that dancers no longer show their stomachs (That law still remains in effect). Belly dance is gaining a lot of popularity around the world. In the USA women are becoming more involved in this very ancient dance.

Belly dance is used as a way of celebrating woman's femininity, as it helps women with self acceptance and to gain confidence in their bodies.  Belly dance exercises are also used in natural childbirth classes, and a recent survey done by
Dance Magazine
reports that women who belly danced delivered their first child painless and with shorter periods of labor.

Women who belly dance are having a lot of fun and feel young at heart. This dance gives the dancer a total new experience, a sense of well-being, joy, freedom and most importantly, is a celebration of the women soul and inner spirit through movement, it makes women feel proud of what they are and it gives them the ability to accept themselves with no flaws. When its time to dance the belly dancer does not remove her costume, the costume is very much a part of the dance routine.  A belly dancer is proud of her costume, and it is crucial to wear the most elaborate and elegant dress to convey professionalism. Today belly dance is enjoyed and taught worldwide in dance studios, schools, gyms and wellness centers,  not only because it’s a dance for all ages, genders, and sizes, but for its originality, customs, and beauty! The costumes were designed to emphasize and amplify the grace, power, and independent control of the womanly form.

BELLY DANCE IS AN ART FORM, IS AN ANCIENT DANCE, SOMETHING THAT WOMEN FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS, FROM MANY CULTURES AND TRADITIONS HAVE DONE, FOR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH, UNITING BODY, SOUL, INNER STRENGTH, AND MIND.

The movement vocabulary of belly dance is identified by swaying hips, curving patterns, whole body isolations, lifts, locks, twists, shakes, drops, complex and sensual movements. Also facial expressions are conveyed which show feelings and emotions.  It is a dance as second nature as breathing, the main focus is on isolating each parts of the body.  Arms and hands move fluidly, like serpents & ribbons in the air. Belly dancing is as majestic as classical ballet; it’s a dance that personifies strength and power inits most feminine form.
